Blood and Marrow Transplant Services has been at the forefront of blood and marrow transplant (BMT) advances since performing the world’s first BMT in 1968. University of Minnesota Physicians here performed more than 4,000 BMTs since then, using leading-edge technology and research, much of which continues to be developed by University of Minnesota researchers.

Our Blood and Marrow Transplant program is recognized as one of the most experienced unrelated donor transplant programs in the country, and one of the largest umbilical cord blood transplant centers worldwide. Using stem cells from blood or bone marrow for transplant, as well as related immunotherapies, we treat patients with a wide range of diseases, including:

Many patients come to our program because of its excellent reputation in the field of BMT, its broad scope of services and novel treatments. We offer a range of treatments, including autologous, related and unrelated donor marrow or umbilical cord blood transplants and immune-based therapies.
As we continuously improve medical treatments for patients, from infants to adults, we are also committed to ensuring our patients and their families receive the best care available at University of Minnesota Medical Center. A specially trained team of health care professionals from oncologists and hematologists, to nurses, social workers, pharmacists and child family life specialists, supports our patients and their families throughout the entire process.

Accreditation and Organizations
FACT
Blood and Marrow Transplant Services is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for allogeneic and autologous marrow and peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation, including collection and laboratory processing. We are the only site in Minnesota to have received this prestigious accreditation.
NMDP
Our program was accredited by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) as an unrelated donor transplantation center in 1987.
CIBMTR, ASBMT
Our program is also active in the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT).
